Gothic tower
This bell tower is the only remaining vestige of the old Gothic temple that stood on part of the site now occupied by the Baroque building of the church of Santa María la Mayor. Its construction began in the 14th century, but was interrupted by the Black Death of 1348, so that it was not completed until well into the 15th century.
Although the outside of the building is clearly visible in its five sections, inside it has four floors with their corresponding rooms: The ground floor or chapter house of the old collegiate church; the first floor or clock room; the second floor or window room; and the third floor or bell room. Crowning this tower is the rooftop, from where you can enjoy the best views of Alcañiz and its surroundings.
It is also a space steeped in history, related to such important events as the Cortes de Aragón held in the city, or the Concordia de Alcañiz. All this - and much more - is explained in the guided tours of this monument that we offer at the municipal Tourist Office.
