Underground passageways, cellar and icehouse

Medieval Underground - Tourist Office

Under the Tourist Office there is an underground space which can be reached by a narrow staircase completely excavated in the rock. Two narrow passages lead from this rectangular cellar, one in the direction of the Calle Mayor and the other in the direction of the medieval refrigerator located on the ground floor of the Plaza de España; this impressive underground room has been linked to an ancient medieval refrigerator (20 metres long, four metres high and four metres wide), in which the snow and ice of winter was kept throughout the year for the preservation of food or sanitary purposes (fevers or fever). This room is accessed by two passages that lead off in the direction of Calle Alejandre and Calle Mayor, which can be the start of an important underground visit of enormous tourist and monumental attraction.
